10 Costa del Sol Fun Facts

So, summer is well and truly underway here on the Costa del Sol. The sun is out, the beaches are filling up and of course the one I notice the most, as I am delivering Mobility Scoots to my lovely clients up and down the coast, the roads are getting busier each day!!

The summer is the busiest time of year for the Costa del Sol (although my busiest period personally is from September to November) and this afternoon I was thinking about what makes this part of the world so popular for expats and tourists alike.

It has to be more than just the weather, so I decided to Google some Fun Facts about the Costa del Sol to share with you all, so here is goes….

  1. The Costa del Sol has the best climate in Spain.
    The average temperature throughout the year is 18.5°C.
    There are at least 300 days of sunshine and the winters are the mildest in Europe. There is little rain in winter and when it does rains the skies normally clear quickly afterwards and the sun comes out again.
    Two cities on the Costa del Sol, Marbella and Torrox Costa, have the best microclimates in Europe, with the surrounding mountains protecting these cities from the cold, northerly winds. So winters are mild and summers are cooler than inland Spain.
  2. The Costa del Sol has over 159 kilometres of coastline
    With more than 125 beaches on a coastline that stretches out over 159 kilometres, the beaches on the Costa del Sol are world class. They are clean and have many facilities including bathrooms, beach showers, beach bars/restaurants, play areas, volleyball courts, water sports and more.
    The Costa del Sol also boasts many Blue Flag beaches (The Blue Flag award is a world-renowned eco-label trusted by millions around the globe that represents a commitment to both people and the environment).
  3. The Costa del Sol has more golf courses than anywhere else in Europe
    The Costa del Sol is often called the Costa del Golf for good reason as there are more golf courses in the area than anywhere else in Europe,
    With over 70 beautiful golf courses the Costa del Golf is the top European destination for golf lovers.
  4. Malaga Airport is the 3rd largest airport in Spain
    Malaga Airport is the 3rd largest airport in Spain, after the airports in Madrid, Barcelona. It is also the 4th busiest Spanish airport after Madrid–Barajas, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca.
  5. Costa del Sol birth place to Pablo Picasso
    Pablo Picasso was born in the city of Malaga on October 25th, 1881.
    On the 27th October 2003 the King and Queen of Spain inaugurated the Museo Picasso (Picasso Museum) located in the heart of Malaga city. You may also visit the Casa Natal (Birthplace of Picasso) in Malaga City, which has been open to the public since 1988.
  6. The Malaga Fair is the biggest on the Costa del Sol
    Every August Malaga Fair, also known as Feria de Agosto, run for 1 week. It is the largest fair on the Costa del Sol and it takes place in two areas; one during the day is located in the downtown area of Malaga and the night fair takes place at Cortijo de Torres. With an audience of about 2 million visitors, the Malaga Fair is an important event on the Costa del Sol.
  7. Malaga is one of the world’s oldest cities.
    When the city was founded by the Phoenicians in 770 BC, it was known as Malaka.
  8. Malaga has 4th largest economy activity in Spain
    Malaga comes in fourth behind Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia in economy activity in Spain. Not surprisingly the most important economy and business sectors in Malaga are tourism, construction and technology services. Transportation and logistics are also beginning to expand.
  9. Actor Antonio Banderas is from the Costa del Sol
    Actor Antonio Banderas (known for his roles in Desperado, The Mask Of Zorro and Spy Kids, as well as the voice of Puss in Boots in Shrek 2 and sequels) was born in Malaga on August 10th, 1960.
